How to label storage boxes so you can find things later
Put a clear box name and room on the outside, then connect that label to a record you can update when the contents change.

The problem
A small label cannot carry the whole story.
A handwritten label works until a box holds several kinds of items, moves to another room, or gets repacked. Writing every detail makes the label hard to scan, but writing too little sends you back to opening boxes.
- “Decorations” may describe several boxes but not the one with the holiday lights.
- A long contents list becomes difficult to read once boxes are stacked or placed on a high shelf.
- Crossing out old contents makes the outside label less trustworthy over time.
What to do
Keep the outside simple and the record useful.
- Use a name people can read without a phone.
Put a specific name or number on the outside, such as “Holiday 02” or “Garage tools.”
- Add the destination room.
The room remains useful during a move even when nobody checks the detailed record.
- Connect the label to the matching box record.
A printable scannable label can open the record for that box; the label itself does not need to list every item.
- Update the record when contents change.
Add or remove item names, photos, and notes without rewriting a crowded contents list on the box.
