Marketplace privacy guide

Post the item—not your home location

A vehicle, room, pet, or household-item photo can reveal more than the listing requires.

Two kinds of location clue

Hidden metadata can include GPS coordinates and capture details. Visible context can include house numbers, mail labels, street signs, reflections, license plates, keys, screens, and recognizable views.

Before posting

  1. Prepare a new copy that does not carry source location metadata.
  2. Review the still and Live Photo motion for addresses, faces, documents, and reflections.
  3. Mute background audio that names a person or place.
  4. Use the marketplace's approximate location controls instead of exposing a precise address.
  5. Inspect the final upload preview and audience settings.

What metadata removal cannot do

It cannot hide information already visible in pixels or infer every contextual clue. Use manual masks, retake the photo against a neutral background, or do not post it when the risk is unclear.
